Many disagree with the value of homework in primary schools, yet these views fail to appreciate the skill and discipline required to have an adolescent study on a daily basis. Good study patterns should be established in the last few years of primary school. It is important that parents understand the part that homework plays in their child’s academic development.

The purpose of homework is twofold:

  1. to complete assignments set by the teacher and
  2. to study privately and carry out revision programs

By the time students reach secondary school they should be in the habit of settling down in the same place, preferably in their own bedroom, with desk and proper lighting, each night at the same time. If this practice is learned at the age of twelve, it will be invaluable in coping with the rigorous academic program of the HSC.

An independent NSW school recommends the following daily schedule as a guide to student and parents.

Primary School

  • Year 1 – 15 minutes
  • Year 2: 15 minutes
  • Year 3: 20 minutes
  • Year 4: 30 minutes
  • Year 5: 30 to 40 minutes
  • Year 6: 40 to 50 minutes

Secondary School

  • Year 7: 1 to 1.5 hours
  • Year 8: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Year 9: 2 to 2.5 hours
  • Year 10: 2.5 hours or more
  • Year 11: 3 to 4 hours
  • Year 12: 3 to 4 hours
