Sleeping tips for kids so you stay sane, happy and together
Our daughter wouldn’t sleep, it was destroying our lives. We were a hazard on the roads, let alone in the work force…we eventually got a night nurse and she cracked it in 2 nights. That nurse is now written into our will.
It’s important that parents are aware of the importance of getting the right amount of sleep for their kids. To do so maximises their learning potential.
Try these….
- Eat dinner at a regular time
- Restrict over stimulating them prior sleep.
- Keep homework, exercise and computer games for later afternoon, so they can chill into the evening
- One hour before bed needs to be down time, relax!
- Avoid stimulants, like chocolate and caffeine
- The bedroom should be dark and media free (also see bullying)
- Keep to a regular bedtime
- Good sleeping patterns require consistency, for sleeping and waking
Is this common sense or a learned skill?

Thanks for sharing this. The one thing I would like to add is that I think the bedtime routine is a good venue for giving your child some “control.” Questions like: ‘Do you want to read a book first or get out your clothes for tomorrow?’ goes a long way to having your child agree to the routine. It also fosters a sense of empowerment for your child, which is wonderful.
