Everyone should also be aware of the age ratings on the games in the top sellers lists.
The average age of gamers is between 25-35, and so the best selling games are usually violent, with coarse language, sometimes drug references and sexual references.
Our rating system works in exactly the same way as the ratings for films – G, PG, M, and MA. Remember also that we don’t have an R18+ rating for games – there are certain games (Grand Theft Auto comes to mind) that would be rated ‘R’ if it existed in Austrlia.
Some games that can be played by a 15 year old really shouldn’t be in the hands of anyone under 18, so just be aware that you need to do a little research before purchasing the latest blood-and-guts first person shooter for your child.
Luckily, most of our discs are produced for a number of countries and territories, and the ratings for countries such as New Zealand and the UK are on the disc. Ask to see the disc and see what other countries think of the game’s content before buying – because, unfortunately, our rating system doesn’t always reflect the game’s content.
MOst of the games on the list for the 360 and PS3 are rated MA 15+, by the way.
