Busy dad doesn’t meaning tuning out, wizen up….
Dadsclub.com.au was interviewed in the Daily Telegraph …we shared these proven ideas with Fiona Baker and Body and Soul….
1. Kids love seeing you involved in their world:
- get to the school canteen; reading at kindy; get involved in fetes, fund raisers, sport coaching- commit to 1 evening a week and schedule in your work calendar as a regular meeting
2. The gift of reading and loving books is an essential habit.
- Dads’ who work late, can buy 2 of your kids favourite bedtime book(s) and read it over the phone
3. Get the kids involved in weekend household chores and turn it into fun
- get them washing the car, hovering, sweeping, taking the dog for a walk, shopping…with the right attitude you can all have fun etc..
4. Dad Dates
- make this an essentail habit; be it dinner, a milk shake or walking the dog by scheduling these events with your kid
- you’ll boost your kids self esteem by them knowing you are investing time with them. Dads of daughters this is especially true and pays dividends when your daughters start dating.
5. Use every opportunity to engage with the kids and initiate conversation
- when it comes to connecting, it’s quantity of time versus quality. It takes time for kids to spill their meandering thoughts. Car trips and Dad Dates become the right environment to do this.
6. Hobbies and Sport
Kids pick up on your enthusiasm, so show a bit and make it contagious. Your kids are likely to mirror your habits (good and bad) so let them see you: reading, getting fit, socialising, playing or watching sport, participating in games and even watching TV shows like Wipeout, Modern Family, Sport, Chris Lilly’s Sumer Hill High and Angry Boys all become great fodder to connect…
