Building a Tree House

Let’s face it; building a tree house won’t be the easiest task you’ll take on this year. It’ll cost you about the same as a couple of DVDs but unlike a DVD or computer game, a tree house is ageless, healthier and if you get it right, it’ll be a work of sheer beauty.
You’ll need a decent tree, loads of timber (at least 4 to 8 beams, 12 to 16 planks, or fence palings, even easier grab some timber sheets, this’ll save you time). Tools, as my father in-law says “you’ve gotta have it all” (drills, saws, hammers, nails, screws, rope, spanner and bolts).
Get your kids involved for some or all of the key stages: ideation, the design, the plan, and the multiple trips to the hardware store and the joy of building. Keep a sense of humour, have a steady hand and get some help.
Start with the platform, then the frame, apply the planks (or fence palings/timber sheets for walls and the roof)
TIP: Ask around building sites for excess timber. Wooden crates offer plenty of versatility. Consider ropes, windows and trap doors are all worthwhile and affordable accessories.

Great advice. Takes me back to when me and my dad built a tree house when I was a kid. Safety wasn’t anyones concern in those days!
Keep up the great articles.
OK, so I’m keen to build a tree-house. And, yep, I’m with you on all the benefits of doing this with and for the kids. But the U-Tube video is a bit disconcerting…how do you get the bloody thing into a tree??? I thought – by definition – a tree house had to be a house in a tree??? The one in U-Tube looks a bit more like somewhere that I’d store my tools. Got anything else???
