Dad of 4 & Wallaby legend, John Eales, shares his tips on being a dad
Dads’ Club recently caught up with Wallaby legend John Eales on being a dad…..
- How many kids do you have and what are their ages?
4 Children, 11, 8, 6, 1
- What is your greatest ‘Dad moment’ outside of your kid(s) birth?
Anytime you see joy in their stride – it’s about the little things
- What’s the most rewarding thing about being a Dad?
Watching your kids fail at something but then get up and have another go because it is something they really want to achieve.
Anytime they smile and greet you with a hug and a kiss.
- What drives you crazy about being a Dad?
Nothing really – I do get mildly frustrated at times though when they don’t listen to me yet if the postman, butcher or even the local vagrant tells them the same things they take it as gospel.
- What’s your kids favorite meal, that is made by you?
Probably either, Soy Sauce Pork, a Malaysian curry handed down by my wife’s parents. Or an oxtail casserole mix match I put it together.
- What’s your response to “Dad we’re bored…”
“in my day….”
- What’s the best holiday you’ve done with the kids and why?
Our recent skiing holiday in Queenstown. It was the first time any on our family had ever skied so it was interesting to clearly be the worst one the family at a sporting skill with the likelihood that it will always remain that way.
It is truly a holiday which the whole family can participate in at the same time. That is if I can catch up to them!
- If there was one piece of advice you would give to a new dad what would it be?
It’s really difficult to do but at times it is important to let your kids fail.
They will learn more from failing than they will from you doing it all for them – as long as you are there to support them when they fall.
This is what my father did for all of us but what I find most difficult to do for our children.
