Celebrity chef, Fast Ed, talks about raising a boy and a girl
Dads’ Club gets 1 on 1 with Better Homes and Garden’s chef, Fast Ed who shared a few tips on being a great dad…..
How many kids do you have and what are their ages?
Two – Daughter Luca (6) and son Finn (3)
What is your greatest “Dad moment” outside of your kid(s) birth?
Helping run my daughter’s nippers group. It’s great that so many mums
come along to watch, but Sunday morning at the beach with all the kids
in their little surf life saving caps is a Dads moment to shine, and it’s so much fun. It our chance to show our kids how much we can share,
how much we can teach, and how much we can do. I always go home at the
end with Luca holding my hand tightly, just because she’s so happy to
spend that time with me.
What’s the most rewarding thing about being a Dad?
That funny look in the kids’ eyes as they’re pummelling me on the
trampoline. They go quite mad, and I love it.
What drives you crazy about being a Dad?
That mums sometimes don’t understand that we have our own way of doing things. Men and women each bring unique, special and vitally important elements to raising kids. Although mums often spend more time with thechildren than dads do, there are things we see, things we know, things we do that no mum can come at.
What’s your kids favorite meal, that is made by you?
For my daughter Luca: lasagne. She’d happily have it every single night,
if I let her.
For my son Finn, well let’s just say he’s a little fussy: carrot sticks,
corn and rice crackers… then a big bowl of homemade ice cream!
What’s your response to “Dad we’re bored”?
Come on, let’s wrestle on the trampoline. They never get tired of that.
What’s the best holiday you’ve done with the kids and why?
When Luca was 3 (and Finn was about 3 months old) I took her away for a
week, just the two of us. She had felt pretty left out for a while
there, but that week cemented our relationship and our friendship. She
talks about it all the time. It was just great!
If there was one piece of advice you would give to a new dad what would it be?
Relax, it’s easier than it seems. Your kids need very little to be happy
and healthy. Most of all, they just need a bit of undivided attention
from you. That means no phone, no work, no TV … just you and them. The
rest is easy.
Dads’ Club is a long standing fan of Fast Ed’s, cooking segment on Channel 7’s Better Homes & Gardens. Look out for his new book ‘Dinner in 10′ in bookshops now.
